We hope you have a great time - September is a good time to go and you should have good viewing. Wolves are hard to photograph because they keep their distance, but you may get lucky (and we hope you do). The 100-400 is a great lens and youll give it a workout in the Park. Please share your pictures with us if you have time. Have a great trip.

I hope to be in Yellowstone this Sept/Oct. I am doing a PIT Project for the Forest Service around Missoula, Mt. the 3rd week of Sept. After that I would like to try out my new toy, a 100-400mm Canon lens, on the Wolfes of Yellowstone. It looks like you have had very good luck over many years in capturing them. I am only hoping for a glimspe or two. But am planning for more. Dan

At work dangit.
Hey Chris, Christine sez: "I think Lamar Valley is his best bet. He may see wolves in Hayden and the Canyons may be up and down the road to Norris. Youve been there in August and saw wolves. And the Agates have been seen in their usual territory past Tower. If he stays in Cooke City (or Silver Gate) he can travel over Dunraven Pass easily. Its hard to tell what will happen this year with new packs - where they will go once it gets warmer and the elk go up into the hills." When I was there in July and August it did help considerably to get up early. The critters are out early but disappear after an hour or two. Then some show up right at dusk. The higher elevations are better(the north side of Mt Washburn is good). For the northern wolves I would stay in Silver Gate or Cooke and if possible at Roosevelt Lodge. It is centrally located and they have cancellations all the time so he may get in there. Then just ask the wolf watchers with the radios where and when the best place to watch is. The interior wolves can be better viewing but unless there is a carcass it can be very hit or miss. A friend of ours is posting excellent info now on www.yellowstonereports.com Sign up for that and it should help dramatically. I saw plenty of bears and wolves during the summer and the Park is beautiful at that time of year. Just take serious bug spray and plan on getting up early. I’ve actually had some of my better wolf viewing during the summer. The pups are big enough to travel around so the packs are more mobile. I hope we answered appropriately, if you have additional concerns let us know. Sorry we didn’t get back to you on this Chris. Tim

Hi Tim Wondered if you can help me. I have a friend whos about to book a trip to Yellowstone at the end of August 2010. My question is because its going to be warmer then , where is the best place to see wolves. I was thinking of telling him to stay in Cooke City and make the trip down to the Lamar Valley but not sure at that time of year, its the best option. Also from a general wildlife perspective, is the Lamar Valley as good as any other place in late August. I am presuming that if wolves are in the that area that he would have to be there at first light? Hope you can help, thanks very much, Chris

Thank you so much for viewing our website and your post, Dale. We’re glad you went back to the Park and saw a grizzly and the Druids. Since the Druids have had some misfortunes this past fall and winter, and currently are scattered, your experience is one to be truly valued. We love putting together the website, but your appreciation makes it worthwhile. Wonderful post Dale, Thank you very much for sharing. Christine and Tim

The last time I had arrived in Yellowstone was July 20th 1969. Significant more for the day man landed on the moon than the fact that it was my twelfth birthday. In the midst of a horrible economy which I knew almost certainly would result in the sale of the company I worked for I told my wife we should go to Yellowstone. So it was that after 28 years of marriage and talking about my one day taking her we made the journey and I returned with her last October. Part of the planing and anticipation of that trip was every few days spending some of my down time at work reading both the words that you have written and looking at the photographs you share with the world. I realized only recently that I should have thanked you. And I belatedly do that now. We stayed in West Yellowstone at the the wonderful Bar-N-Ranch awakening each dawn to the Beautiful view of the mountains and the howls of the coyotes. As you may know travel at this time was difficult and Going to the Lamar Valley involved going to Bozeman and coming down into the park. We went the first day having a flat that no one wanted to repair and were so late we gave up. Our last day in the park showed hope of the best weather so we repeated the trip. It appeared even after we arrived that we had failed to find the wolves. A kind couple from California seeing our disappointment took us to and overlook of a bison carcass to see if we could find something there. The climb was worth it for the view but no wolves. As we were beginning to talk of climbing down all the effort to get there was rewarded as a huge grizzly came easing through the sage often standing and surveying the situation. This was enough to justify everything that it had taken to get to Yellowstone. They took us down the road with little hope of finding the wolves but fate had found favor with us on this final day and the Druid pack had just come to rest and socialize in the sun. I thought of these pages as we drove back your words an images had come to life. Thank you for what you do, Dale

Just read Christines comments about your winter in Texas. We have had the coldest winter for hundreds of years here in England. In fact we had the wettest November, followed by December & January being sooo cold and very snowy. Very little sun so far so hopefully spring will be nice. Enjoy your trip in May and shame about your picture not making it. You have a brilliant collection of photos. Take care, Chris

Hi Crystal thanks for the kind feedback. It is hard to get enough of Yellowstone isn’t it? I bet the Park is fun with a 12 year old. As for places to stay in the northern part of the park in the west you can stay at Mammoth and Gardiner. The cabins in Mammoth are fun and clean though most use a community bathroom. In the north eastern part of the Park we suggest staying at the Roosevelt cabins. They are well located for watching wildlife. Also the Pine Edge and Silver Gate cabins in Silver Gate as well as any of the lodging in Cooke City. The Grizzly Lodge in Silver Gate is good as well although the management has not always been wolf friendly. In July sometimes the Druids follow the elk in to the high country so you may have trouble seeing them but certainly not always. There are several packs in the area for viewing and my trip in July included many wolf sightings. Sometimes the Agates Pack are visible on the northern slopes of Mt Washburn. In July you will need to get up early to catch the animals at dawn before they bed down to avoid the heat. Should be a fun trip, July is a beautiful time to be there as you know. Thanks for stopping by, let us know how your trip goes, Tim and Christine

Thanks to both of you for the wonderful photos and commentary on the beautiful Lamar/Yellowstone region. Ill be headed back that way with my 12 year old son this July. We were in Yellowstone for the 1st time in July 2009 and didnt get enough of it then! We have to go back. Any help you could pass my way on places to stay at the north end of Yellowstone/Lamar Valley would be really helpful. P.S. I just watched an Animal Planet special on the Druid Pack from 2007 (they had a big, dark brown/black leader). Sure hope we catch site of them this year. How is viewing in July? Thanks again, Crystal

I was thrilled to find this website and to see Christine Baleshtas piece. I had just read “Looking for 527” and can only imagine how difficult it is for her and all those who researched, wrote about, filmed and cared about those special animals for so many years. When I read the LA Times article this last Sunday “Controversy stalks Montana wolf hunt,” featuring 527F, I wept most of the day and even now – it has touched something primal and very deep inside me. My husband and I visited Yellowstone shortly after the release of the wolves and along with park officials, rangers and other visitors, you could feel the excitement about the program and its far reaching implications for helping to restore a healthy ecosystem into the park - which indeed it did. We signed up as Wolf Restoration Program Sponsors and followed the program as best we could over the years. Its a sad chapter in a glorious story but hopefully, the next chapter will help not only protect those wolves that remain but also help to educate the humans who yet fail to understand the importance of preserving all wildlife. Sincerely, Susanne Belcher (So. Ca. artist)

Hey Tim, I believe Yellowstone is actually considered grassland biome. The Taiga or Boreal Forest biome is further north - Canada, Alaska. The forest trees in Yellowstone resemble the Taiga forests but the undergrowth does not. Yellowstone is rockier and the slopes are steeper compared to typical Taiga biome ecosystems. Pretty sure... Hope this helps. Tim

Hi Mike, thanks for checking our site out. Cool you could surf the net while in the Park. Some trips we see very little wildlife. Some years are better than others. Weather, animal population numbers and luck all play a part. Our bear sighting numbers in the fall are dismall compared to the spring time and the wolf population is very low right now. We get what we get and I try to be happy with it. I hope both our next trips are scary with wildlife. Thanks for taking the time to write. Tim

Was in YSP, Lamar Valley, when two blacks wolves jumped a baby antelope, chased up and down the area in front of all of us for what seemed like forever, then just pulled off. Only to have the baby taken by the cayotes that had been needling the wolves earlier. Very intense and amazing to see. Thanks to all the "wolf watchers" there.Would love to hear from anyone else who got to see that. The blacks had come off a buffalo carcus waaay across a sagebrush flat above the river. Grizzly on it the next day.

Well Ive been checking for a week or two just to see the new update and today its been worth the wait. Wonderful writing and pictures as normal, actually I think some of the pictures are better than I have seen before. A suggestion though I know this must take a lot of time anyway: For those not familier with Yellowstone, could you label where you took the photos or produce a map of where you visited? Thank you once again for another wonderful experience, Chris

Thanks Cathryn for the kind words. Yellowstone IS fantastic isn’t it? Glad you enjoy the reports. We enjoy creating them. Regarding the images what you are talking about are “wide angle” images. Typically taken with low focal length lenses like 10 to 17mm. This gives a very wide view of the scene at hand. Then you compose the image trying to find a close subject combined with a far background subject. (flower close, mountain far. Or stream close fading off into sun far) Something like that. Next you have to have a large depth of field which means you have to have everything in focus. So you can set your camera to a small aperture like F/16 or so. Steve (Hoot) on Ynet taught me and perhaps he can help you. It can be done with a point and shoot. If your camera has a “landscape” setting or wide angle setting use that. Get close to your “close subject”. Get low with the camera. You will have to play with it but you will rapidly get the idea. For the blurred water I stick a very dark filter in front of the lens which causes the shutter speed to be slow. Hence the blurred water while all else is still sharp. Tripod of course. If you wish to discuss this further feel free to e-mail me us. Thanks Cathryn! Happy shooting, Tim

I found your site via the YNET forums. Your stories and photos are incredible. Im curious about how you get many of your landscapes to look like the viewer is moving into the scene. I dont know how else to describe it. Being a novice with a point and shoot digital camera, am not sure what to call it but many of your flowing water scenes seem to move the viewer into the distance. Do you know what I mean? Anyway, Thanks for sharing such fantastic artwork. You are truly gifted! I discovered YNP 3 years ago and thats where I vacation every May now. Your sharing takes me back there and I thank you!

Rain and snowmelt has made everything green and hopefully protects the Park from fires this summer. We did not see any wolf pups during the week we were there, though the Druids, Cottonwoods (527s pack) and the Blacktails (302s group) have puppies. The Agates do not. The Cottonwoods have 4 or 5 and I think the Druids have 11 (possibly a double litter). I havent heard of anyone seeing the Blacktail Packs pups yet, but Im pretty sure they have a litter. Thanks for posting, Staci!

After reading your story we are looking forward to going back May 17 2009. We also carry bear spray. We have not been in your position yet, back as you said, that little spray can sure gives toy a false sense of security while you are in your car. Hope to see you next year. Thanks for the story. Hi Karen yes we do sell the images. I need to get more organized about it. One of these days... If you load the image you will get an address in your address bar like "http://www.ylwstone.com/t10p47.jpg". If you give me the name of the file which is the info between the / and the .jpg (here it is t10p47) and tell me the size you want I can quote you a price. Some images cant be blown up too large but most of the work on the trip reports can. I have sold them up to 20"x30". Email me at tim@ylwstone.com. Thanks Karen! Tim

Hi Cindy! Yes, it was exciting. I can tell when I became concerned because I stopped taking pictures. Ha! The last shots I have are of the bear crossing the creek. He was down wind so I thought he would smell us and run like they usually do but he kept sniffing and coming. Every time he would get off track he would stop and taste the air and aim directly towards us again. I finally felt he was going to turn and then he stopped, sniffed and started up the long hill we were on. We were laying on top of the hill so we dropped down the other side and as soon as we were out of his line of sight we ran like chickens. Christine is surprisingly fast when properly motivated…. Thanks for dropping us a note Cindy! Tim

Hey H&R! Good to hear from yall! I did look for you folks while we were there. It was nice sitting watching the bears and wolves in the big empty quiet of Pelican Valley. We had hiked in with the sole purpose of finding Cs wolf 640 - the one whose collar she paid for. The chances of success were extremely limited so we felt very fortunate to find her and the rest of the Mollies. -Its a huge valley. Yellowstone was very kind to us once again. Take care guys, Tim

We wanted to thank you for the great information you provided. We took our first trip to Yellowstone and this site was very helpful in preperation. I have studied wolves for sometime, in many regions. Lamar valley was simply the best. I utilize canine behavior in my training with domestic dogs and their humans. The study of wolves is vital for me both professionally and spiritually. My hope is that Brother Wolf may come to roam this Earth it was once givin by the creator, and that we may grow to understand theyre role on the eco-system. They manage theyre numbers fine. We need to learn to co-habitate and Yellowstone allows the chance for that. Your tips were right on! Thanks again, Mike ward www.pack-mentality.com

Austin, 90 degrees 60 days in a row and counting...
Hey Joe and Jennifer, Great choice for a honeymoon! No worries the North Rim Closures are only a small side road that gives access to viewing locations only. The Main Grand Loop Road that goes all the way around the park is very much open. So you can go to the Lamar and Slough and everywhere else just like you always do. You just cant view the falls where you usually can. I found this also: "The good news is that the South Rim will be open with access to Artist Point so you can still see the Lower Falls. You can also park at Uncle Toms cabin (South Rim access) and hike the Rim Trail and steps below it. Walk west to a view of the Upper Falls. The view is very beautiful from Artist Point. A hint - go earlier or later in the day. Mid-day is when a lot of the tour busses arrive." So thats an option for viewing locations. You probably seen this but it has a map of the small closure: http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm The Park is lovely this time of year. Check out the flowers on Mt Washburn. Lots of moose in the Tetons. Have a great trip guys! Tim and Christine

Tim and Christine - love the site. We are honeymooning in the Tetons and Yellowstone in August. To our horror, we have now learned the "north rim closures" are in effect for the entire summer. Does this mean we cannot go to Lamar Valley, Slough Creek, or anywhere else on the NE side of the Park? We are staying in the grand tetons. I havent noticed any other roads leading in that area. Does this also mean we cannot see the Lower or Upper falls? Any detour routes to get to Lamar valley or the Falls for us would be desperately appreciated. We have tried the National Park websites and information phone number and have not found them very helpful. Thank you in advance, as our honeymoon begins 2 weeks from today!

Thanks for the note Mark! The first week of August should be great for fishing. Water levels good by then. Dad and I fished the Soda Butte and found the upper regions winding through the woods were best. The third meadow of Slough is a bit of a hike but the cutthroat fishing should be excellent. Have a great trip!

Thanks Stefano! You are going to love Yellowstone. Summer is beautiful in the Park. Be sure and spend time on Mt Washburn. The flowers there in the summer are spectacular and in the mornings (during the summer) its one of the best places to see grizzlies and wolves. Have a great trip! Tim

Staci, Thanks for visiting our website and were so glad you enjoy it. The wolves are indeed fascinating creatures and there are many books out there. I recommend "The Yellowstone Wolves: The First Year" by Gary Ferguson and "Decade of the Wolf" by Doug Smith (head of the Yellowstone Wolf Project) and Gary Ferguson. Each will follow the story of wolf introduction in a very personal way and make the Park even more special on your next visit. Also, "Yellowstone Wolves in the Wild" by James Halfpenney is also good. Jim gives tours and teaches classes at Yellowstone Institute.

Love the latest account of your recent trip! I visited the Park last year for the first time - I envy your frequent trips but enjoy the Park through your eyes! Hope to return next summer for a longer visit but in the meantime will visit here to get my Park fix! I am fascinated by the wolves and would love to learn more about them. Any good ideas for resources? Thanks again for your wonderful visits and for sharing them with us!

Dieter, I am really glad you signed our guestbook. I was hoping you would. Your enthusiasm for the Park helps us enjoy it more when we are there and your support of Christine and our website is very much appreciated. More people than you could know are thankful for your efforts on behalf of the wolves. Sie sind unser Freund. Dankeschon Dieter!

Thanks Chris! Christine and I truly appreciate you reading our reports and taking the time to respond. It helps to know someone is out there! It does take some time to put them together but thankfully there are two of us working on it, me doing the images and the html code and C writing the wonderful script. Nice to have something we can create together.
For camera equipment presently (6/25/2008) I am using my old Canon 20D body along with a 500mm f4.5, 400 f5.6, 80-200L, and for landscapes a Canon 10-22mm lens that I like a lot. The 10mm lens is a must for wide-angle landscapes on a 1.6 cop camera body. On the May 2008 trip I used a 10 stop ND filter for the blurred water shots. Yellowstone is such a great place to practice nature photography.
Thanks again Chris!
Tim and Christine

It now is a habit of mine to check your site every May & October for a read of your trip. I look forward to it. The latest episode is fabulous, the pictures are wonderful and the writing interesting, giving so much information that I want to go back right now. Tim has such a great eye for a photo (what lens is he using)?. Thank you very much for posting the latest instalment, it must have taken a lot of time to put together but I assure you, worth it.
